What will online High Holy Days be like?

This year, when so much is unknown and uncertain, we will collectively create our Sanctuary, our sacred space, online and in our souls. In the book of Exodus we read, “Let them make me a sanctuary…” But we can creatively read this verse as “make me into a sanctuary.”

We designed our High Holy Day services to bridge the Zoom divide, to open hearts, lift each other up, and explore different paths of introspection, reflection, celebration, and renewal. We offer online services and classes from the beginning of Elul (August 21) through Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah. We will celebrate our diversity, expand our horizons, lift our voices and spirits, and give meaning to our everyday lives.

We also have put together High Holy Day Resources, for those new to SZ High Holy Days and those new to High Holy Days at Home (all of us!)

Elul Events  (August 20 — September 18)

We have a tremendous number of events scheduled for the month of Elul (now) leading into the High Holy Days.  These are open to all.

What makes Congregation Sha’ar Zahav services unique?

Sha’ar Zahav has been building sanctuary for decades, embracing a diversity of individuals of all sexualities, genders, races and abilities. We welcome all households, including single member, interfaith, single-parent, multiple-parent and multicultural families. We are rooted in historic traditions and create new Jewish traditions that reflect our modern lives. Our liturgy reflects these values.

Each High Holy Day service is unique. Our beloved clergy, Rabbi Mychal Copeland and Cantor Sharon Bernstein, teach us with their insight, energy, and spiritual guidance. Our talented and diverse lay leaders add their stories and wisdom.

Are other programs offered beyond the High Holy Day services?

There will be many opportunities to learn as we build sacred space together. Beginning in mid-August, there will be online classes on T’shuvah and the afterlife; meditation; holiday baking; Mussar (a Jewish ethical and spiritual practice); Tree of Life Yoga; and more. There will also be an online cemetery visit and a yizkor service. See our Elul Events page here.

How can children participate?

We will have special online experiences for children to participate and learn.

How can I access the Machzorim (High Holy Day prayer books) to participate online?

There are several no-cost and discounted options to access or purchase the Machzorim (prayer books) in a way that works for you. Register for details.

I’m new. Will I feel comfortable at High Holy Day services?

Every year we welcome many new participants and members. Our services embrace both those experienced in traditions and those new to High Holy Days. This year we will all be experiencing services in a new way and inviting each and every person with us to bring their unique gifts in creating our sanctuary together.

Online services will be a little different than our in-person services. We are excited about our plans for each of our individual services included in these time blocks. Some will appeal to specific needs. Several will be designed for all of us to come together as a community. Most online services will be under an hour. We will have breaks in-between individual services to make it all enjoyable.

Times subject to change. We will post Schedule updates here.

Full details, including links and instructions, will be sent via email to all registered High Holy Day participants.
